The first thing I look at is the actual weight rating, not just the largest advertised screen size. Two 65-inch TVs can have very different weights. If the TV is near the limit, the arm may be hard to move, droop slightly over time, or place unnecessary strain on the mounting surface.
The second concern is the VESA pattern. This is the spacing of the mounting holes on the back of the TV. The mount must support that exact pattern. A worthwhile swivel mount also has solid steel construction, accessible adjustment points, and a wall plate wide enough to fasten securely into the framing. Leveling and tilt adjustments save frustration
Walls and framing are not always perfectly square, and TVs are very good at revealing even a small crooked line. Look for post-installation leveling adjustment. This allows the screen to be corrected after the wall plate is installed, rather than forcing a complete reinstall because the TV looks slightly off.
Tilt is helpful when the TV is mounted above normal eye level. It can improve the viewing angle and make ports easier to reach. Do not expect tilt alone to solve a TV mounted too high over a fireplace. If you need to crane your neck to watch, the mounting height is the real issue.
Cable management should allow movement
Built-in cable clips are useful, but they are not a complete cable-management plan. When the arm extends and swivels, HDMI cords, power cords, antenna lines, and Ethernet cables need enough slack to move without getting pinched or pulled loose.
I recommend checking the cable path with the mount fully extended and turned in each direction before finalizing the bundle. Use appropriately rated in-wall cable methods when cables are being concealed inside a wall. Do not run a standard TV power cord through the wall just because it looks cleaner. That can create a safety and code issue.
The Wall Matters More Than the Box
A quality mount cannot make up for poor attachment to the wall. In a typical Los Angeles County home, that may mean wood studs, metal studs, masonry, plaster over framing, or drywall with unknown backing. Each requires a different approach.
Wood studs are generally the most straightforward option for a full-motion mount. The wall plate should be secured with the correct lag hardware into solid framing, not just drywall. Stud placement also affects where the TV can be centered. Sometimes the best structural location is a few inches away from the visual center of the wall, and the mount choice needs to account for that.
Metal studs deserve extra caution. A heavy, full-motion TV mount should not be installed with ordinary drywall anchors. Depending on the TV weight, extension, stud gauge, and mount design, the installation may need specialty fasteners, backing, or a different location. Masonry requires anchors and drilling methods suited to the material, not hardware selected for wood framing.
